Pool Deck Coatings

Slip-resistant deck systems for indoor water parks, hotel pools, municipal pools and aquatic centers.

Pool Deck Coatings & Resurfacing

A pool deck is the hardest floor in the building. It's wet most of the day, it gets walked on barefoot, it's soaked in chlorinated water and sunscreen, and it has to stay slip-resistant while it's soaking wet. Regular floor paint does not survive that. We install coating systems built specifically for aquatic environments, over concrete we've prepped to the manufacturer's spec.

Pool Deck Coating Services

• Recoat over an existing coating — strip and re-prep a failing deck coating and put down a new aquatic-rated system in the same color. Good option when the deck is sound and you want it to look new without changing the surface profile.

• Full resurfacing — a built-up textured system when the deck has lost its slip resistance, has spalling, or you want a different look.

• Color and pattern work — zone marking, depth markings, lane and walkway delineation, multi-color layouts.

• Repairs before coating — crack repair, spalled edges, joint work, transitions at gutters and drains.

Pool Deck Coating and Resurfacing Process

1. Walkthrough and testing. We measure the area, look at what's failing, and test the existing surface — adhesion pull tests on the old coating and slab moisture testing. Guessing here is what causes callbacks in year two.

2. Written scope and estimate. You get the product we're proposing, the data sheet, the prep method, the schedule and the number. No surprises mid-job.

3. Shot blasting. We blast the deck to the profile the coating requires. Shot blasting cleans and profiles without flattening a deck's existing texture the way grinding does — that matters if you have a textured deck you need to keep.

4. Repairs and patching. Cracks, spalls and low spots get addressed before any coating goes down.

5. Prime and coat. Primer, then the coating system in the number of coats the manufacturer specifies, at the spread rate they specify. We keep records of material used per section.

6. Cure and turn over. Heat, air movement and dehumidification to bring cure times in as tight as the product allows, then we walk it with you before you reopen.

Slip resistance, in plain numbers

Wet slip resistance is measured, not eyeballed. The industry benchmark for wet-use flooring is a wet DCOF of 0.42 or higher under ANSI A326.3. Pool deck coating systems get there through texture — broadcast aggregate, a textured topcoat, or a rolled non-skid additive — and the amount of texture is a dial we can set with you. More texture means more grip and a rougher feel underfoot; less texture feels better on bare feet and is easier to clean. We'll walk you through the tradeoff and, where the manufacturer publishes a wet slip figure, we'll hand you the sheet.

Wisconsin pool code requires pool decks to be slip-resistant and cleanable.

We work around your schedule

We sectionalize pool deck coatings. The deck gets split into zones, each zone gets prepped, coated and cured inside your closure window, and the rest of the deck stays open. For facilities that only close a couple of days a week, we work those days and come back. For seasonal outdoor pools, we work the shoulder season.

Common Pool Deck Coating Questions

Can you coat over the paint that's on there now?

Sometimes. It depends on whether the existing coating is still bonded to the concrete and whether the new system is compatible with it. We pull-test it. If it's failing, going over the top of it just buys you a year.

Will you have to grind off our deck texture?

Not if we shot blast. Blasting profiles the surface without leveling it. If your deck texture is part of the code-required slip resistance, keeping it intact also keeps you out of a plan review.

How long does the pool have to be closed?

Depends on the product and the square footage, but we build the schedule around your window, not the other way around. Some systems are walkable in hours; some need days. We'll tell you before you sign anything.

Do you warranty the work?

Yes, and on manufacturer-spec systems there may be a manufacturer warranty available on top of our labor warranty. Ask us about it on your project.

How much does it cost per square foot?

It depends on how much prep the deck needs and which system it takes. Recoats cost less than full resurfacing. We price it after we've seen it.
